Change is Good

By | Uncategorized | One Comment

Dear NSTR Friends,

I want to begin by thanking each and every one of our visitors, members and vendors for staying with us this year.  To say the least it has been a tough one for many and we send our thoughts and prayers out to those who have lost loved ones or had to work through loss of a job or other life event.

While we have tried to do what we can to keep you all informed of the changes in the short-term rental industry, growth and challenges alike, it is with great sadness that we have decided to discontinue National Short-Term Rental, LLC.

What does this mean for you?  Well, I have always said that change is a good thing and with change come new opportunities so I will just say, stay tuned.

I love the multi-family and rental industry so know that in some form I will be back.  I will keep you all informed and as I leave this platform I will also let you know a few things first in the form of information and requests.

For more than 20 years I have been in the field of leadership and strategic planning and will continue to provided consulting services in the following areas:

  • Strategic Planning Retreats (one of my favorite things)
  • Team Development
  • Leadership Coaching
  • Presentation Skills
  • Customer Service

You have attended my classes and the feedback that I have received from facilitating has been wonderful and I look forward to offering you continued service in each of these areas as needed.

Have a blessed holiday season and I will be in touch as I work to recreate a new look and feel for the future.  I will continue with a newsletter but it will have a new look and byline.  I will also continue to keep you all informed of STR news and needs.

So, not goodbye, just til we meet again,  it has been a pleasure and I look forward to seeing you all soon,

Johanna Cunningham

Membership Campaign – 2 for 1

By | Uncategorized | 4 Comments

Welcome to November 2020.  Only one more month until 2 important events.  Christmas and the beginning of 2021.  I don’t know about you but I am looking forward to a new year.  I know that Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate) will look and feel different this year but I am determined to make it as special as I can for my family.

On another note, and the purpose for this post is to make sure that you take advantage of the 2 for 1 membership special.  There is no better time to support your short-term rental industry than now.  Florida, Nevada, California, Texas and North Carolina are all looking at and actively working on modifications for their STRs.  In fact, Nevada just recently made changes to their ordinance that have additional requirements for off-site owners.  So, NSTR put out a Red Alert to make our membership aware of the meetings and you answered the call.  Your voices were heard and appreciated so THANK YOU for supporting your industry.

The reality is that more changes are coming so it is more important now that you renew or join NSTR so that you can remain informed throughout the year.  In addition, we are asking you to help us keep up to date with all the changes in your areas, so if you have any updates, let us know and we will share that information in our newsletter.

Education, training, advocacy, legal tips, industry best practices and more is available to you.

So click on the tab Join NSTR, select your category and get 2 years for the price of 1 year.

Thank your for your ongoing support.

Hard to believe that it has been more than 6 months since our world changed.  No matter your political position the travel industry in general has been hit hard.  The short-term rental (str) industry  was not spared to its effects and I have empathy for tenants and landlord/owners alike.  Both sides of this industry have been impacted; the tenant who lost his/her job and can’t afford to pay rent and the landlord who cannot pay his mortgage/bills/insurance/etc.  There simply is no winner in this scenario.

So the question I will pose to you is what have you done to keep your units filled?  It is important during this time to share what has worked for you with others.  National Short Term Rental (NSTR) was designed to support and inform the STR industry and no matter what we are facing we need to support and stick together, especially at a time like this.

So let’s share our successes.  Email with your responses to the following questions:

  • What has been your biggest barrier during Covid-19 and how did you overcome it?
  • What have you done to keep your units full?
  • What changes did you make to your unit/home that made the biggest difference to your guests?

I look forward to your responses and will post them on our website.

Are YOU Ready For The Big ONE? Earthquake 7.0+

Sitting on my couch playing Sudoku, I was not prepared to feel the rolling and movement of another earthquake in less than two days.  The last time I remember feeling this sort of roll was the San Francisco event that had me running under my doorway which I now understand is NOT the correct place to be.  As I watched my chandelier sway and my driveway roll I knew that the epicenter was close.  One very big blessing that day was the fact that my father-in-law was at the World Series at that exact time.  If he had not been at the baseball game he would have been sitting in traffic on the part of the freeway that collapsed.  An interesting point to note is that the Bay Bridge, not far from the collapse was scheduled to be retrofitted that very next week.

Look Who Is Getting On Board the Home-Sharing Train Now

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

In the beginning there was the garage apartment, a bedroom that was loaned to a friend who just wanted to visit for a few days or the soldier who stayed with a buddies friend.  No matter the circumstance, back in the day, no one was charging for the stay and it was out of kindness that we were blessed to be a guest in someone’s home.  But today that has changed and the home-sharing, vacation rental and executive rental business has quite simply boomed.

Communication is the Key to Unlocking, Well, Everything

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

One of my favorite leadership authors is John Maxwell and I have followed him for more than two decades.  His advice and insight is logical, ethical and always timely.  In a recent article he spoke about communication and the impact that it not only has one you but how it impacts those around you. The first thing one needs to establish is connection with the other person.  Once a positive connection is established it will increase your influence and trustworthiness.
